'I need an EHR, but why is this MY problem? Shouldn't this be OUR problem?' Exactly. Welcome to HCHIC.

"Our Father's life was shortened by many years because a laboratory test result that showed a reversible kidney failure was lost in the paper shuffle."

-- The Dunn Family

"I've seen death caused by preventable errors, disorganization, bad outcomes, high cost and poor care in nearly every place I have worked in my career as a medical doctor because no one is coordinating Health Information Technology."
-- I. Valdes, MD, MS

Costly medical errors can be eliminated with Electronic Health Records/Computerized Order Entry Systems but no one in Houston is coordinating these systems. The Harris County Health Information Cooperative (HCHIC) will be holding its inaugural fund raising event to begin unification of EHR's in Houston Thursday September 20th from 6:30-8:30pm at the St. Arnold's brewery (printable directions here) on Thursday September 20th, 2007 6:30-8:30pm.  Many St. Arnold's brewery products will be available on tap free of charge (donations appreciated), including root beer.  A silent auction and auction will be held with items ranging from 'Dream team' Health IT consulting by internationally recognized experts to Hollywood Classic collectibles.  The brewery is not air-conditioned so dress is cool casual.

Auction Items:
You need not be present to bid. Call 713-249-2881 to bid up until September 20th, 7:30pm. You can email your bid prior to September 20th to ivaldes at hal-pc.org

Tragedy strikes every day in the Houston area through preventable medical errors, ineffective care and costly care.  Medical errors are the 8th leading cause of death and are an enormous societal financial burden. Effective, county-wide Health Information Technology can change this. By donating to the Harris County Health Information Cooperative (HCHIC) the life you save may be your own.

There are many ways to give ranging from $10 donations to $8250 platinum membership which supports both a private and charity clinic doctor EHR. Donation instructions here. Much like a lighthouse benefits all of us, your tax-deductible contribution to HCHIC will be used for desperately needed Electronic Medical Record (EMR) unification with proven and robust non-proprietary software that will be implemented, developed and promoted in Harris County and Texas. If you cannot attend the event, your tax-deductible contribution can be sent to HCHIC 4010 Blue Bonnet, Suite 202 Houston, Tx 77025.   Membership and Sponsorship donations received prior to October 31st will be 'founding' memberships. Membership allows voting rights as well as access to internal communications. Current goal: $80,000. 3 year budget goal: $2 million.

HCHIC's mission is to unify Health Information Technology and Electronic Medical Records in Harris County and the state of Texas for the good of all. HCHIC is a not-for-profit corporation (501 C 3 pending) dedicated to educating, developing and implementing proven, robust, non-proprietary software to unify and vastly improve the quality while decreasing the cost of providing health care to all citizens.

We embrace all patients, providers and health care organizations in Harris County and Texas by guiding, consulting, educating, developing and providing real solutions to difficult health information technology problems that enhance freedom, allow growth and provide self-sufficiency to people and organizations that benefits the generations to come.
